  7.     Billboards can't solve the planet's problems. But, says
  8. eco-artist MARK HECKMAN, 27, "you can reach a lot of people
  9. with a single visual idea." Travelers are getting the message
  10. on his 48-ft. by 14-ft. sign outside Newark International
  11. Airport. Its subject: the endangered rain forest. An
  12. office-furniture maker who stopped using wood from the
  13. threatened trees footed the bill. Heckman's first sign was a
  14. 1982 self-portrait in his Michigan hometown that proclaimed him
  15. the "world's best artist." Now he's advocating a worthier
  16. cause.
